Surviving in the Desert: Strategies and Tips

  1. Be Prepared to Build a Fire Despite its reputation for warmth, the desert can get very cold at night. Learning to make a fire is crucial to keeping warm and signaling your presence to emergency services. Use sage and dry brush as fire starters.   2. Save Your Sweat, Not Your Water In the desert, the priority is to maintain a normal body temperature and protect your skin from the sun. Build a shaded shelter that allows air circulation and avoid walking in direct sunlight.

  3. Do Not Drink Cactus Water Contrary to popular belief, cactus water is not drinkable and can be toxic to humans . It is better to refrain from drinking water from a cactus.

  4. Stay Off the Ground Desert soil can be extremely hot. Create a cushion to sit on or use car seats if they are available. Put at least a foot and a half between you and the ground to avoid overheating.

  5. Keep Your Clothes On Although the heat can encourage you to undress, keeping your clothes on is essential to protect yourself from the sun and avoid dehydration. Cover as much skin as possible to prevent sunburn.

  6. Stay High to Avoid Flooding Flash flooding is a real danger in the desert. Avoid low areas like ravines or canyons and favor higher ground.

  7. Share Your Itinerary Before leaving, inform your loved ones of your destination, your itinerary and the expected date of your return. The key to a successful survival plan is to share your plans with others.
